From the GFM (global financial meltdown) to the Rugby League results the news plays a role in everyone’s life, but sometimes it can feel like information overload. With so many stories across so many different media it’s hard to focus on the information that affects you personally and professionally. That is why we started the Offsider newsletter, to cover the issues that affect you and talk about how to deal with them.
One issue that is getting a lot of coverage right now is the GFM. So much is being said in the media about this topic, it can start to get a bit overwhelming. What I find people really want to know is “what does this mean for me and how can I protect myself?”
Now I’m neither an economist nor a clairvoyant so I don’t have any credentials to advise you on what to do or how to combat the current environment, but I am happy to share with you my strategy for riding out the storm.
M&M, I’m not talking chocolate here; I’m talking basics and simplicity. M anage your costs and M aximize your opportunities. We all have to concentrate on our own circle of influence, and these two functions of our business are key always, but never more important than they are now.
Go through your operation and look at every avenue that you can to save on costs, be ruthless, and remember every cent you save will go into the bottom line. Also optimize any opportunity that comes your way, be aggressive. Don’t wait for opportunity to walk in the door, go out there and drag it in by the scruff of the neck, and any thing you quote on follow up, follow up, and follow up again.
World news can definitely affect how you do business but it’s industry news that really gets down to the nuts and bolts of your job. It is so important to stay in touch and up to date with what’s happening in your industry and it’s easy since the AWCI launched its national magazine On the Surface.
